Start at page one and you will spend a year reading, because a literature review with no method behind it has no edge to stop at. Start with what you are going to do and everything else acquires a boundary, including how much reading is enough.
Every chapter still gets written. They simply arrive in this sequence, and each one hands the next one something it needs.
- Three first: a method you cannot describe in plain steps is a study you cannot run
- Two next, and only the literature the method leans on, since unbounded reading never finishes
- One after those, because a problem is easiest to state once you know what you are doing about it
- Four when data exists and not an hour sooner, however tempting an empty results heading looks
- Five last, with chapter one reopened the same week so the promise and the outcome finally agree
02Why chapter one gets written twice
The opening chapter makes promises: this problem matters, this study will answer it, these questions will be asked. Written early it is a forecast, and forecasts age badly across three years of a project that changed twice in its second year.
So it is drafted early to give the committee something to approve, then rewritten in the same fortnight as the conclusion, when you finally know which promises were kept. Committees reading the two side by side are checking exactly that, and a document where the opening still describes a study you abandoned is the commonest reason a full draft comes back.
03Chapter two is a filter rather than a library
A literature review is not a demonstration of how much you read. It is the argument that your study is worth running, built out of other people's work, and it stops where that argument is complete. Candidates who are stuck here are nearly always stuck because nothing has told them where the edge is.
The method tells them. Once the design is settled, the review has a shape: the theory the design rests on, the studies that used something similar, and the gap your questions sit inside. Everything else is interesting and goes in a folder rather than in the chapter.
04How the writing is actually bought
By the chapter, on dates you agree to, with nothing paid for a stage that has not started. Some candidates already hold a design and a dataset and want the chapters built out of them. Others have pages and need a reader who will name what is absent, then keep them to dates. Most take a mixture, weighted toward whichever chapter they dread.
Analysis is handled by statisticians who work with live datasets daily, and what returns holds the output, a note on why each decision went the way it did, and a reading of it in words you could say out loud at a table. Is it acceptable to write chapter three before chapter two?
It is how most finished doctorates were actually produced, whatever their tables of contents suggest. The design decides which literature matters, so drafting the method first gives the review a boundary and saves months of reading that never enters the document. Committees care about the finished sequence, not about which week each part was written in.
Can I buy one chapter rather than the whole thing?
That is how most people begin here. A chapter is the biggest unit of doctoral work anybody can commission and still recognise as their own, so it carries its own figure, arrives in parts you approve as they come, and is followed by another only if you ask. Nobody should be asked to pay for a whole thesis in advance.
My programme wants a three-article format rather than five chapters. Does this still apply?
The sequence holds, it simply repeats. Each manuscript carries its own method, its own slice of literature and its own results, so the same order runs three times over, with the framing material written last once you know what the three papers actually found. Journal requirements are read first, since a target journal outranks a general template on length and structure.
Who handles the statistics and the results chapter?
Statisticians who work with data for a living, using whichever package your programme accepts. Back comes the analysis, a note on why each test was chosen ahead of the alternatives, and an explanation plain enough to hand to somebody who has never opened the software. Nothing arrives that you would be stuck defending when a committee member asks why that test.
How long does a stalled project usually take to restart?
Far less time than the months already lost, in most cases. A stall is seldom about typing speed; it is a design question nobody ever closed. So the first move is not writing at all, it is settling what the study does in steps a stranger could follow. Candidates who had produced nothing for a year often have a full method a fortnight later.
