01What is really in the file before any test runs

Textbooks hand you data that behaves. Courses hand you an export from a survey tool, and the difference between those two is where most of the frustration in this subject actually lives. The software will happily run a procedure on nonsense and return a confident number.

Here is what is usually waiting in there, and each item changes the result rather than merely the tidiness.

02The tidying is graded even when nobody mentions it

Rubrics rarely include a row called data preparation, which persuades students it does not count. It counts twice over. It changes the numbers you report, and it shows up in the write-up as a sentence saying how many cases you began with, how many you analysed and what happened to the difference.

That sentence does a lot of work for a marker. It says the person running this understood their file, and it is often the clearest signal in an assignment of whether the analysis can be trusted at all.

03Everything has to be re-runnable, including by you

Point-and-click work vanishes the moment the window closes. Nobody can tell six weeks later why one case disappeared or which recode produced the variable a table depends on, and that is the version of this subject where marks go missing for reasons no one can reconstruct.

So the steps come back written down as syntax or a script, in an order that can be run again from the raw file. It also means a question in class has an answer, since you can point at the exact line that produced the number somebody is querying.

Do I have to supply the dataset?

Where your course provides one, send it exactly as you received it, along with any codebook and the assignment itself. Where you are collecting your own, send whatever exists and expect questions about how it was gathered, since that shapes which procedures are defensible. Nothing is invented or generated to fill gaps, and a file too damaged to analyse honestly gets said so plainly.

My numbers changed after the file was cleaned. Is that a problem?

It is the whole point, and a sign the work was done properly. Excluding an impossible age or reversing a scale item that was entered backwards moves results because the original figures were wrong. What matters is that every change is recorded and justified, so the version you submit is one you could defend line by line if somebody asked.

Which software can be covered?

SPSS, R, Python and Excel, with the choice made by your course rather than by preference. Output is produced in the shape your assignment specifies, including table formats where a rubric names one, since those marks are cheap to earn and are frequently the ones left behind. Where a programme uses something else, say so before ordering and you get a straight answer.

Can it be explained so I can answer questions in class?

That comes as standard rather than as an extra.
