THE ENCORE · WHAT THE FORMULA BAR SAYS

The Excel model assignment.

Finance and accounting work increasingly arrives as a workbook rather than as a paper, and it is marked in a completely different way. Somebody opens your file, clicks the cell holding the answer, and reads the formula bar. Whatever sits in there is most of your mark.

01A typed number is a number with no working

Click a total and find a formula pointing at other cells: that is working shown, and it is what earns the method marks. Click the same total and find a figure somebody typed, and there is nothing available to award, even when the figure is exactly right, because no marker can tell whether you worked it out or copied it from the person sitting beside you.

That is the entire grading model in two sentences, and the rest follows from it. Pasting values over formulas is the most expensive habit in spreadsheet assignments, and it almost always happens in the last hour, when something misbehaves and typing the answer in feels like the quickest way out.

02Build it in three zones

Professional models are laid out the same way nearly everywhere, and rubrics quietly reward that layout even when they never name it. Set the file up this way before you calculate anything and the marks look after themselves.

03Where the marks actually disappear

Hardly any of it is the finance. It is presentation and habit: columns too narrow so figures show as a row of symbols, currency stored as text so it will not add up, rounding applied inside the model instead of at the display layer, and answers left running to six decimal places that no accountant would ever write down.

Two more can cost a whole question. Circular references, which turn a model into a puzzle nobody can mark and which usually come from a total accidentally including itself. And the missing sentence: most briefs ask what the number means, and that sentence is frequently worth more than the arithmetic above it. Write it on the sheet, in a labelled cell or a text box, in plain language a manager could act on.

04The four minutes before you upload

Do this from the saved file rather than from the window you have been working in all evening, since the version on your screen and the version in the folder are not always the same thing.

05When the model is not the problem

None of this is hard, and all of it is worth marks, which makes it the cheapest preparation in the whole subject. What it does not fix is a term where four courses are due in the same fortnight and the modelling is simply the item you reached last.

In that case the model can be handed over as accounting coursework, or as part of the wider business load, and it comes back built the way described above, with every formula visible so you can follow each step and answer for it later. That last part is not decoration. A model you cannot explain is no use to you in a viva, an interview or a job, which is where this particular skill goes on to earn its keep.

FAQQuestions to control

Does it matter which spreadsheet program I use?

Only in that your marker has to be able to open it and see live formulas. Submit in the format the brief names, and if you built the file elsewhere, open the exported version and check that everything still calculates. Functions that exist in one program and not another are the usual casualty, so test anything unusual before you rely on it in a graded workbook.

Should my working go on a separate tab?

A separate tab is fine and often tidier, provided it is labelled and the outputs still reference it live rather than repeating typed figures. What causes trouble is a workbook of unnamed sheets where nobody can tell which one produced the answer. Name every tab for what it holds, and put a short note at the top of each saying what it does.

My formula is right but it looks messy. Does that cost marks?

Sometimes, and it costs you time regardless. A single long formula doing five things is hard to check and hard to fix, so a marker hunting for one error may simply not find the correct parts. Break it into rows, one step each, with labels down the side. It reads better, it earns method marks more reliably, and it makes your own debugging far quicker.

What if a value genuinely is fixed?

Then it is an input, so put it in the inputs block with a label and a source note, and reference that cell everywhere it is needed. The rule is not that numbers may never be typed; it is that they should be typed once, somewhere visible, rather than buried inside a formula where nobody can find them and you cannot change them without editing the model.
