The sums are the arithmetic of a shopping list: multiply, divide, shift a decimal, change a unit. What makes the paper hard is the standard bolted onto it. Programmes set the pass mark near the top of the scale, allow only a few attempts, and hang your clinical start on the result, because a medication error is not a thing anybody can mark generously.
So start with two facts from your own handbook rather than from a classmate. What mark does your programme require, and how many attempts does it give you before the course has to be repeated. Then do one piece of arithmetic: apply that mark to the number of questions on the paper, and you have your allowance for the whole sitting. For most people it comes out at one question, sometimes at none. That single figure is why ordinary revision does not work here.
02Every wrong answer belongs to one of five faults
Score a practice set and all you learn is a number. Sort the misses by cause and you learn what to do on Tuesday evening. There are five causes, and nearly everybody has one column taller than the others.
- Reading. The stem gave a daily amount and asked for a single one, or handed you a figure that was never needed
- Setup. The right quantities in the wrong arrangement, which is the fault that yields a confident answer with the decimal point somewhere plausible
- Conversion. Grams into milligrams, pounds into kilograms, hours into minutes: the step skipped because it felt too obvious to write down
- Calculation. Plain slips, most of them decimal placement, and most of those under time pressure
- Presentation. A correct quantity marked wrong for a missing unit, the wrong rounding rule, or an answer given to more places than the paper asked for
03The log, and what to do with it
Keep it on one page: question number, which of the five it was, and a line saying what you would do differently. Nothing more, no colour coding, no elaborate system. After thirty or forty items that page tells you where your attempts are really going, and it is hardly ever where you assumed.
Then drill the tall column and only the tall column, in short sittings, daily rather than in one heroic evening, because accuracy is a habit rather than a topic. Work each problem the same way every time: units written beside the numbers, the setup laid out even when you can see the answer, the answer circled with its unit attached. Under pressure everybody reverts to whatever they practised, so practise the slow version and pressure has nothing left to break.
04The rules that are local, not mathematical
A large share of lost items are correct arithmetic dressed wrongly, and every one of these rules is set by your own programme rather than by the subject.
Learn them from the practice paper your school publishes, not from a video made for somebody else's. When the day comes, the sitting is yours; nobody else takes it in your place and no arrangement changes that. What genuinely lifts a result beforehand is structured practice with somebody who can see your working, which is what exam preparation is built for, and where the rest of the term is eating the hours this needs, the coursework around it can be carried while you drill. Clearing this one deserves a proper celebration, because plenty of good nurses meet it twice.
- The rounding rule, and whether it changes between tablets, millilitres and infusion rates
- Whether a calculator is permitted, and which one, since some programmes supply an on-screen version and forbid your own
- Which formulas are provided, and whether you may carry in a conversion table
- How answers must be written: units attached, decimal places fixed, a zero before the point and none trailing after it
- How much time the paper allows for each item, which decides whether you can afford to check everything twice

How much practice is enough?
Enough that your log stops producing new faults. Volume alone is not the measure, since a hundred problems worked the same careless way simply rehearse the carelessness. Most people need a few dozen sorted items before the pattern shows, then daily sets aimed at the fault that keeps appearing, and finally two or three full papers under the real time limit with nothing on the desk that will not be there on the day.
The maths is easy for me, so why did I fail?
Because the paper is not testing whether you can do the calculation, it is testing whether you can do it perfectly under a clock while reading carefully. Confident students lose items to unit conversion and to stems that ask for a single dose after quoting a daily total. Sort your misses by cause rather than counting them, and the reason usually turns out to be one repeated habit.
What happens if I use up my attempts?
Policies vary and yours is written down, so read it before you sit rather than after. Commonly the course must be repeated, which delays the clinical placement attached to it and can push a graduation date by a term. Ask your programme office two questions early: how many attempts you have, and what the remediation route looks like if you need it, since some schools require a workshop before a retake.
Can I bring my own calculator?
Only if your programme says so, and many do not. Some sittings provide a basic on-screen calculator, some allow a simple handheld model with no memory, and a few permit nothing at all. Find out before you practise, then practise with whatever the exam will give you, because a tool you have never used is one more thing to think about on a paper that leaves no room for it.
